Ebler invincible at Slovenia Match Race Cup 2012

Ebler Matchracing team has won Slovenia match race cup after taking victory against Viktor Ogeman's crew VEJA in an all-scandinavian final. This is Ebler's second consecutive triumph in SMRC, but unlike last year, this time he took the trophy without loosing a single match.

Eight teams representing five nations took part at Slovenia match race cup, a grade 2 event held in Izola. Despite the postponement flag hanging on the pole every morning, organizers managed to complete the whole program. Mistral in fact showed up almost regularly at noon and lasted until late evening hours allowing competitors to sail whole round robin, quarterfinals, semis and grand finale.

The first two skippers to leave the scene were Szymon Syzmik (POL) and Felix Oehme (GER), scoring 0 and 2 points in round robin, while Ebler and Ogeman advanced directly to semis with 7 and 5 wins out of seven contests. Rest of the crews had to fight for remaining two places in quarterfinals.

At this stage Vesna Dekleva Paoli faced Rafal Sawicki and Dejan Presen challenged Gorazd Rajar. It was a best of three series, which concluded with 2:1 in favour of Sawicki and Presen. Since the wind was still persistent, sail off matches for fifth place ended the day. Dekleva Paoli took advantage in both pre-starts, dominated each leg of the racecourse and finally grasped a 2:0 victory.

Semifinals got underway Sunday with a steady 8-knot breeze from NW. Ebler picked the weakest participant remained in the game Rafal Sawicki for opponent and left Presen to Ogeman. Latter dealt with Slovenian stunningly well being in control for the whole time and ultimately moved forward to finals. Second pair, Ebler-Sawicki, on the other hand, had some interesting lead changes. Sawicki took advantage in pre-starts multiple times but Ebler always caught up in second upwind and passed the finishing line ahead of the rival.

After the defeat Sawicki met Presen in petit-finale. However, all eyes were set on Ebler-Ogeman final duel. Nordic couple had some fierce pre-starts and close tacking moments, but Ogeman's threats didn't last long. Defending champion was simply unbeatable. »The goal was clear from the beginning, we wanted to win. I don't think the competitors were bad at all. Actually, we had a few close races which could have gone either way. It is nice to win all the matches but the other teams did also very well,« said Ebler after conquering his second SMRC title.

It's Mads and his team again ! Twice in a row!

The new (and old) champions of Slovenia Match Race Cup are danish skipper Mads EBLER and his crew. After beating Sawicki 2:0 in semis today, he went on undefeated in this years event to finish first after a 3:0 score against Ogemans swedish team. Bravo Mads!

Slovene hopes were on Dejan Presen but a 0:2 result in semis against Ogemans and another 0:2 in petitfinals against Sawicki wer lae than a perfect day for the home team.

Congratulations to the winners, all the other competing sailors and not the least the race officials and umpires for a pleasant and competitive regatta.

Only semis and finals left for Day 3

Kinder wind conditions allowed the RC to finish the round-robin, quarterfinals and the sailoff for fifth place today.

A nice seabreeze came a bit late, but lasted long in the bay in front of Izola. After the remaining five flights of the round-robin were completed Ebler and Ogeman earned their semifinal places and unfortunately Oheme and Szymik finished their sailing at SMRC 2012.

The other four teams had a quarterfinal battle for the remaining two places in semifinals. Both quarterfinals went to three matches and in the end Presen won over Rajar 2:1, and Sawicki over Dekleva with the same result.

Since the wind was still there a sailoff for fith place is took place and Dekleva beat Rajar 2 : 0.

It can be fun without wind too (in the evening)

Table footbal tournament: 8 teams, 5 nations... almost like Europeans :).

Winners of "SMRC2012 calciobalilla tournamet" are J&B (Jure & Boris). Final score was a straight 2:0 against Lumba Team. So at least on friday evening organizers got the better over the compettitors!

Ebler and Presen equal on top after Day 1

After yesterday’s practice session and registrations, racing began this morning. Due to a lighter than expected sea breeze Race Committee only managed to get through five of the intended ten flights. After fifteen sailed matches two skippers emerged at the top with perfect scores, local favorite Dejan Presen and last year’s champion Mads Ebler (DEN). Viktor Ogeman (SWE) is currently third with four wins and one los, followed by Vesna Dekleva Paoli (SLO), on three wins and two losses.  More here.

As daylight faded away all participants relaxed over a diner, live music by TVB band and a tournament of table football. We will share the name of the winner (main prize is a folding bike) with you in the morning.

Change of venue for SMRC 2012

No major changes, the event stays at it is, but in 2012 it will take place in the town of its origin, Izola, 7 kilometers from Koper.

Unfortunately this year the community of Koper could not guarantee the logistical support and infrastructure, they have offered to the organizers in the past couple of years. Therefore in the desire to nevertheless prepare a worthy match racing event, the Organizing Committee quickly decided to move the venue to Izola, where the host club Jadralno Društvo J/24 is based.

Since numerous match races have been held here in Izola and the conditions on the race course are very similar to those in Koper, we are sure all the participants will enjoy a memorable event.

Most necessary logistical changes are already in operation and Organizers are now in a process of negotiating accommodation arrangements close to the new venue.

Vesna Dekleva-Paoli and her team qualified for SMRC

Six Slovene and three teams from abroad competed at the Slovenian Open Match Race Championships this year. Vesna finished the round-robin in first position with only one match lost, and went on to beat Gorazd. Rajar 2 : 0 in semifinals, and Dejan Presen 3 : 1 in the final. Therefore she not only became the 2012 Slovene MR Champion, but by winning the event overall took the place of a qualifier for Slovenia Match Race Cup. Since the Championship was sailed on the competition boats for SMRC, for sure this was a great practice for Vesna and also for Dejan who has been invited to SMRC beforehand.

Congratulations to Vesna and her team for a well deserved victory at the Slovenian Open Match Race Championships and the qualification to our Grade 2 event.
